By Dr. Jeremy Holloway

Healthcare exists for human beings. That sounds obvious, almost insultingly so, yet our systems often behave as if people are an inconvenient variable rather than the reason the system exists at all. Somewhere between efficiency dashboards, throughput metrics, and compliance checklists, the human pulse of healthcare has gone quiet.

This is not an anti-technology argument. It is a pro-human one. Advancement without human health and wellbeing is not progress. It is motion without direction.

The Frankenstein We’ve Been Building

Over the last century, our industries—healthcare included—have been constructing something impressive and unsettling at the same time. Picture it like this: first came the body. Systems focused on anatomy, organs, and symptoms. We learned how to stabilize, repair, and replace parts. Arms, legs, lungs, hearts. The work was extraordinary and necessary.

Then came movement and coordination. Departments, specialties, billing systems, supply chains, electronic records. The creature could now walk, lift, process, and scale. Efficiency became the obsession. Speed became the metric. Complexity became normalized.

Now we are adding the brain. Artificial intelligence, predictive analytics, automation, decision support. The machine can think, calculate, and anticipate. That should give us pause. A body with a brain but without a conscience is not innovation. It is risk wearing a lab coat.

Without intentional humanization woven into the system, this creation drifts further from the people it was meant to serve. The gap between structure and health outcomes widens. The system optimizes itself while communities experience burnout, loneliness, fragmentation, and preventable harm.

The Band-Aid Problem of “Social Responsibility”

Industries often respond to this tension with something called social responsibility. Donations. Sponsorships. A glossy annual report about giving back. These are reactive gestures, not structural commitments.

True accountability is different. Health and wellbeing should be embedded into products, services, policies, and workflows from the beginning. Society should not need to be repaired after harm occurs. There should be a direct, living feedback loop between systems and the people whose lives they shape every day.

When healthcare, technology, and industry listen only to themselves, they lose self-awareness. Healthy systems require reflection, humility, and real accountability. Not slogans. Not performative checkboxes.

Humanization Is Not Soft—It’s Structural

Humanization is often misunderstood as sentimentality. It is neither soft nor vague. It is concrete. It shows up in how decisions are made, how care teams are supported, how older adults are seen, how social isolation is addressed before it becomes a diagnosis, and how dignity is preserved even when time is tight.

If we fail to braid human experience, social connection, and meaning into our systems now—especially as AI accelerates—we risk creating outcomes that look advanced on paper while eroding wellbeing in real life. Technology can amplify wisdom or widen distance. The difference is intention.

A Call to Rebuild With People at the Center

This is where collaboration matters. Real change does not come from one discipline, one leader, or one innovation. It comes from weaving perspectives together—healthcare, education, technology, community, and lived experience.

I invite you to share your wishlist for healthier outcomes in the systems shaping our society. What would healthcare look like if it truly reflected human values? What would we design differently if loneliness, connection, purpose, and dignity were treated as essential indicators of health?

Ways to Engage and Collaborate

There are many ways to move this work forward together. Invite me to share more through a webinar, keynote, or live event. Bring these conversations into your organization, your conference, your classroom, or your boardroom. Systems change when leaders are willing to pause long enough to listen.

If you are working in healthcare, education, policy, technology, or community development, there is room to collaborate in meaningful ways. Humanization does not slow progress. It gives it direction.

The question before us is simple and uncomfortable: what is advancement if it does not improve the health and wellbeing of human beings? The answer will shape the next century of care.

Let’s choose wisely.
